Cold meat industry blocked compulsory specifications for 4 years

JOHANNESBURG - Parliament has responded with shock to revelations that the cold meat industry blocked compulsory specifications on processed meats for four years by complaining about high levies. Listeriosis outbreak that has led to the death of 183 people in South Africa and which has been traced to cold meats. The number of deaths continue to increase  as most of the citizens are not aware that the meat is contaminated. The National Consumer Commission (NCC) ordered a recall of affected goods on 4 March 2018.The affected products will be properly disposed off, so that it will  not cause any harm to people.

National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) said no compulsory specifications exist for processed meat products and that the NRCS only regulates canned goods and not processed meat products. The industry is guilty of ignoring regulations that are deemed necessary by the Department of Health. This type of behaviour from the industry cannot be tolerated.

As from this date many people have lost their lives due to the negligence of the cold meat industry, those that are responsible or involved should be prosecuted. The Department Of Health should work tirelessly to try combat the breakout of listeriosis in SA.
Justice must be served for those who lost their lives.

  4. These are human lives that we are talking about, some families tend to loose their bread winners as a result of these irrational actions. Law must take action about this as they are being swayed away from their right of life. They lost all the trust from the consumers and it will take a lot of time to return it.
