'Horror' as doctor cuts open wrong patient's head – reports

A Kenyan doctor in Nairobi  has reportedly been suspended after performing a brain surgery on the wrong patient. Two men had been brought into the hospital last weekend. One man needed a surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain. While the other only required nursing and medication to heal a trauma swelling in his head.

The wrong labelling of tags, resulted in the wrong man being wheeled into theatre and his skull opened. The mistake was realised hours after the surgery. Doctors said the blame is to be pinned to the nurses who were responsible for patient labelling.

In my view this is one of the worst cases of medical malpractice to become public in this day and age. I would like to urge all hospitals to ensure that all nurses are well trained and have adequate knowledge, as the lives of patients depend on them.

  1. The doctor did nothing wrong, the person who need to be suspended is the nurse who numbered or labelled a wrong patient.

  2. The nurses should check if the right patient goes into surgery.
